Health authorities are advising increased vigilance regarding a mosquito-borne illness, despite it not being endemic to European regions. In 2024, 25 cases were reported in individuals who had recently traveled outside of Europe. While the risk of local transmission remains low, the growing presence of the tiger mosquito within the community necessitates heightened preventative measures.
The ministry of Health recommends vaccination as a key preventative measure, notably for individuals considered high-risk travelers. Beyond vaccination, travelers are strongly advised to utilize insect repellents, wear light-colored, long-sleeved clothing, and employ mosquito netting to minimize the risk of bites. Individuals should also be aware of potential symptoms both during travel and upon returning home, including muscle aches, high fever, skin rashes, and pain localized behind the eyes.
This immunization program is available to anyone aged four years or older and is administered in a two-dose regimen, with three months separating each dose. The program targets individuals planning travel to areas where the disease is prevalent, offering a proactive approach to protection.
