Delhi teen confined at home after Modi video backlash
Eighty-six days after an 11-second video from a Delhi protest upended her life, a 15-year-old girl identified as R remains confined to her home over safety concerns, facing ongoing threats and housing instability after making crude remarks about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, theguardian.com reported.
Protest Roots and the Video That Sparked a National Backlash
Before 24 July, R focused on ordinary teenage routines like makeup, mathematics homework, and spending time with friends at a local tea stall. As student protests spread across the country demanding education reform over examination paper leaks, she joined crowds at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. During the demonstrations, she recorded a short video clip featuring profane remarks directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The agitation originally targeted the ousting of then-education minister Dharmendra Pradhan following repeated exam paper leaks. However, after a violent police crackdown on a student march, anger widened toward the central government. Protesters packed Jantar Mantar nightly, with signs and rhetoric increasingly targeting Modi and Amit Shah, whose ministry oversees the Delhi Police.
Pro-government supporters quickly seized on the profane and sexualised language used during the demonstrations to condemn the crowds. Social media clips singled out women protesters who were subsequently doxed. R found herself at the centre of this digital and political storm.
Authorities File Police Case Against R
Authorities filed a police case against R for insult intended to provoke a breach of the peace, along with statements that could lead to public mischief and defamation. The complainant told the independent news organisation Scroll that she had contacted R and demanded a public apology.
Following the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, Prime Minister Modi posted on Instagram regarding vulgar abuses directed at him by what he called mischievous children, stating it was a cultural shock while adding that the children must be forgiven rather than punished. R subsequently recorded a grainy video against a white wall with her hands folded in a namaste, apologizing to the nation and calling the incident her first and last mistake. Local media reported that the complainant withdrew the police case after the video appeared online.
Despite the withdrawal of the legal case, the apology failed to stop the abuse. R received rape and death threats, abusive phone calls, text warnings, and visits to her apartment building in a Delhi suburb. She reported hearing callers label her with derogatory slurs and offering money for anyone who could find or physically harm her.
Leaked Data Forces R and Mother to Flee
With their phone numbers and home address leaked online, R and her mother fled their residence. As her mother, a single parent, lost the income she earned from tutoring, they struggled to secure new housing. They moved through multiple apartments while the mother sold her gold jewellery to cover mounting expenses. That money is projected to last roughly four months, leaving her mother searching desperately for work.
R has not returned to school and views the prospect of going back as an impossibility. Some friends cut off contact, isolating the teenager further. In late August, following repeated visits from media crews, she published another video addressing Modi directly to state that her life had become unmanageable.
Stuck indoors, R observes a new wave of protests unfolding over controversial electoral rolls revisions that have removed 130 million voters from the register. While she feels solidarity with detained and brutalized students, concerns for her mother and their uncertain living situation prevent her from joining them. Having turned 15 a couple of months ago, she looks toward preparing for her upcoming board exams.
