Kerr, Tinch and Rojas Highlight Golden Day at Tokyo 25
TOKYO - Hamish Kerr of New zealand soared to victory in the men’s high jump, Cordell Tinch claimed gold in the 110m hurdles, and Yulimar Rojas emphatically qualified for the triple jump final as Day Four of the world Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 delivered a series of compelling performances.
Kerr secured the gold medal with a flawless clearance of 2.36m, surpassing Korea’s Woo Sanghyeok, who managed 2.34m. Czechia’s Jan Stefela and Ukraine’s Oleh doroshchuk shared bronze with jumps of 2.31m. kerr had initially been leading on countback before his winning jump.
In the 110m hurdles,USA’s Cordell Tinch delivered on his potential,winning his frist world title in 12.99. Jamaica’s Orlando Bennett took silver in a personal best of 13.08,with teammate Tyler Mason claiming bronze in 13.12, also a personal best. Defending champion Grant Holloway did not advance to the final.
Four-time world champion Yulimar Rojas marked her return to the triple jump after a two-year hiatus with a confident qualifying jump of 14.49m, securing her place in the final.
Elsewhere, Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone smashed the US record in the women’s 400m semifinals, clocking 48.29 and moving to seventh on the world all-time list. Marileidy Paulino (49.82) and Nalwa Eid Naser (49.47) also progressed to the final.
The men’s 400m semifinals saw Botswana’s Collen Kebinatshipi set a world-leading national record of 43.61. US champion Jacory Patterson also advanced, while Olympic medallists Matt Hudson-Smith and Muzala Samukonga were eliminated.Japan’s Yuki Joseph Nakajima qualified to the delight of the home crowd (44.53).
All major contenders safely navigated the first round of the men’s 800m, including emmanuel Wanyonyi, Donavan Brazier and Mohamed Attaoui.
