The decisive point came from Flavio Cobolli,who battled back from a set and a break down to overcome Spain’s Jaume Munar 1-6,7-6 (7-5),7-5. Cobolli’s victory followed a strong performance by Matteo Berrettini,who defeated Pablo Carreno Busta 6-3,6-4,securing Italy’s initial lead. Cobolli had previously clinched Italy’s place in the final with a hard-fought win, including a 32-point tie-break, two days prior.
Adding a unique layer to the Italian triumph is the longstanding connection between Cobolli and Berrettini. Berrettini, six years Cobolli’s senior, frequently played tennis with a young Cobolli and even babysat him, as revealed in a 2011 video circulating on social media. Fourteen years later, the pair celebrated a Davis Cup championship together, with Cobolli remaining undefeated in singles throughout the tournament.
“It’s impossible to describe this feeling. I dreamed a lot for this night,” Cobolli stated after the match. He further emphasized the team’s commitment, saying, “We cannot lose for our country. sometimes you learn, but you never lose.” Overwhelmed by the moment, Cobolli confessed, “I don’t know what I did today. I don’t know where I am. The only thing I know is that I am a world champion.”
