Television presenter Davina McCall has announced she recently underwent a lumpectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer.
Sharing the news in a video posted to Instagram, McCall, 56, explained she discovered a lump “a few weeks ago” that initially came and went. She credited a campaign by Lorraine Kelly, encouraging regular self-checks, with prompting her to seek medical attention.
“I found a lump a few weeks ago. It came and went but then I was working on The Masked Singer and Lorraine, the TV show, and Lorraine Kelly had put signs on the backs of all the doors saying ‘check your breasts’ and every time I went for a wee I did that,” McCall recounted. “It was still there, and then one morning I saw myself in the mirror and thought ‘I’m going to get that looked at’.
Following a biopsy, the cancer was confirmed, and mccall underwent surgery nearly three weeks ago. She expressed relief that the cancer was detected early, describing it as “very, very small.”
“My lymph nodes were clear, I didn’t have any removed, and all I’m going to do now is have five days of radiotherapy in January as kind of an insurance policy,” she added. While initially “very angry” upon receiving the diagnosis,McCall stated she now feels “much more positive.”
McCall’s declaration underscores the importance of regular breast self-exams and early detection, a message frequently championed by cancer awareness organizations. Breast cancer remains the most common cancer in women worldwide, according to the World Health Organization, with early diagnosis substantially improving treatment outcomes.
