Dave Grohl Dedicates My Hero to Jack Smith at Festival
Wearing an Iowa Hawkeyes T-shirt, Dave Grohl dedicated the Foo Fighters’ performance of “My Hero” to “my new friend Jack” during a Power to the People Festival set. Although Grohl did not specify the individual by his full name, former assistant U.S. attorney and special counsel Jack Smith was spotted in the crowd.
The T-shirt worn by Grohl served as a reference to Senator Eric Schmitt’s attempt to get Smith to perjure himself before Congress earlier in the week. During the festival performance, the band played a set that included “Times Like These,” a cover of “Young Man Blues,” “All My Life,” “The Pretender,” “My Hero,” “Best of You,” and “Everlong.” Earlier in the day, Grohl also joined Morello on stage during a separate set to cover KISS’ “Rock and Roll All Nite.”
Festival Reminiscences and Tributes
During the performance, Grohl took time to reminisce about his past experiences campaigning for John Kerry and paid tribute to his late mother, Virginia. He recalled traveling through small towns in the Midwest where crowds gathered at rallies in need of rescue. Grohl shared memories of his mother working as a public school teacher for 35 years in Fairfax County, describing her as an amazing person who always fought the good fight.
Reflecting on those campaign travels from city to city, Grohl told the audience that the experience was about coming face-to-face with people to discuss their needs and talk about rescuing them from situations. He emphasized that face-to-face communication is necessary to resolve the issues.
