Sudan‘s Dagalo Pledges Unity, Accuses Brotherhood in Frist Post-Oath Speech
Nyala, Darfur – In his first address following his swearing-in as head of Sudan’s governing coalition, General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (“Dagalo”) committed to maintaining Sudan’s unity and establishing a system guaranteeing equal citizenship rights. Delivered in Nyala, Darfur province, Dagalo’s speech outlined the coalition’s priorities and leveled accusations against the muslim Brotherhood, alleging they planned the conflict that erupted mid-April 2023.
Dagalo stated the war beginning April 15th was “imposed by the Brotherhood on rapid support after its siding with the framework agreement,” and called for “a transparent international examination that determines and set the war plans.” He also addressed the widespread human suffering, pledging cooperation with the international community to protect relief convoys and ensure safe passage for humanitarian aid.
The “Facilitation” alliance, led by Dagalo, affirmed its commitment to international covenants and treaties, and the pursuit of balanced relations with neighboring countries.
The speech was followed by support marches in several Darfur regions. The Presidential Council of the new government comprises 15 members representing all regions of Sudan, including regional rulers. The coalition aims to establish a civilian system based on the transitional constitution of Sudan for 2025, which abolishes the 2019 transitional document and prior legislation. Key tasks outlined in the constitution include ending ongoing conflicts and establishing a new foundation for the Sudanese state.
Currently, the Sudanese army controls Khartoum, and the eastern, northern, and central regions, while the Rapid Support Forces control most of Darfur – excluding El-Fasher – and important portions of the Kordofan region. These areas controlled by the Rapid Support Forces encompass approximately 870,000 square kilometers, representing over 45% of Sudan’s total land area of 1.8 million square kilometers.
