Czech Minister resigns Amid Bitcoin Donation Scandal
PRAGUE – May 23, 2024 – Czech Justice Minister Pavel Blažek has resigned amid a burgeoning scandal involving a Bitcoin donation. Teh resignation follows revelations that the Bitcoin wallet of convicted trader Tomáš Jiřikovský contained far more cryptocurrency than initially declared, prompting questions about its origin and Blažek’s involvement. This situation raises serious questions about transparency in government; we reached out for comment.
In Bitcoin’s wallet, from which the convicted trader Tomáš Jiřikovský donated almost a billion crowns to the Czech justice department, there were much more Bitcoins than officially stated. This was stated on Friday by Czech Radio Radio, referring to two independent transaction analyzes of Arkham and Walletexplorer. TASR informs about this, referring to the portal Irázlas.cz.
Czech Minister of Justice Pavel Blažek, in response to the Bitcoin case with an unclear origin received by his resort, decided to resign on Friday afternoon. However, he added that he is not aware of any illegal conduct.
Blažek presented the gift of Bitcoinov so that Jiřikovský pledged to the state to hand over 30 percent of it held by cryptocurrencies. In his wallet, however, according to the Bitcoin radio, it was several times more, worth about 12.5 billion crowns (5366 bitcoins). The Ministry could thus get up to 3.7 billion crowns.
Blažek claims that the bitcoin account was opened with the participation of a notary. According to the notarial deed published by the Ministry, it came 7 March. The court expert told him that he had already opened his wallet in the presence of Jiřikovský and his lawyer. Reportedly there were 1562 bitcoins, which proved a screenshot of the screen from the open bitcoin wallet. Of this, they then calculated the value of a 30 % donation.
Suspicious bitcoin transfers
However, Radiožurnál found that the money from the accessible wallet began to leave a day earlier, for two accounts, one of which belongs to Jiřikovský. For the other, it is not proven to be clear who its owner is.
However, Bitcoins for the Ministry, in the presence of a notary, left five different payments up to March 7: Four of the Darkweb’s Nucleus market and one directly from the Jiřik account where he sent the money the previous day.
Blažek at a press conference claimed that the wallet was opened for 30 hours. However, the Kryptocurrency expert Milan Půlkrábek said Radiožurnál said that such an operation lasts a maximum of a few minutes.
Radiožurnál reporters tried to contact Jiřikovský personally on the phone, but unsuccessfully. The ending minister Blažek did not respond to the text message.
Tomáš Jiřikovský ended up in prison for embezzlement, drug trade and illicit armaments in 2017. He operated and apparently founded the online marketplace Nucleus Market for drug sale, which ended shortly after he was detained in 2016. Especially weapons, drugs and medicines were sold there. He was released from prison in 2021.
Bid
Blažek said on Thursday that he received an offer to get 30 percent of the Bitcoin for the Ministry from the wallet, which the police seized from Jiřikovský and returned it to him after his release. Through his lawyer, he offered a 30 percent that Minister Blažek received. The state received 956.8 million crowns (more than EUR 38 million) in public auctions.
