Czech Inspection Warns of Defective French Wine Sold in Billa
Floating impurities clouded a bottle of French rosé wine inspected on August 21 at a Billa retail location on Pražská ulice in Znojmo, triggering a public warning from the Státní zemědělská a potravinářská inspekce, as reported by TN.cz.
French Rosé Fails Laboratory Analysis
Inspektoři odhalili, že u závadného růžového vína Rosé D’Anjou, Appellation Rosé D’Anjou Controlée je patrná oxidáza. This chemical flaw alters the beverage through uncontrolled contact with atmospheric oxygen.
Inspectors noted that the wine originating from the French winery Barton & Guestier failed to meet acceptable standards for taste and aroma, carrying distinct oxidative traits alongside visible floating particles. The compromised merchandise is explicitly identified by batch number L83386C001.
Chemical Breakdown and Commercial Quality
When wine undergoes oxidation, the reaction degrades its fundamental character. The process typically shifts the liquid toward a darkened or brownish hue while imparting flat aromas and flavors reminiscent of apples.

Such faults stem from exposure to air during handling or storage failures. This strips the beverage of its intended freshness before it reaches consumers.
Parallel Enforcement Actions Across Chains
The discovery mirrors separate enforcement actions undertaken by Czech food safety regulators concerning imported wines across different retail chains. In a parallel case highlighted by trebicsky.denik.cz, inspectors issued a warning over a Spanish white wine, Viña Mercedes Chardonnay, packaged in a three-liter bag-in-box format under batch number 3124B.
Billa Ignores Requests for Statement on Refunds
Media representatives at TN.cz contacted the corporate communications team at Billa to obtain a statement regarding the presence of the defective batch in their inventory. The retailer did not provide a response prior to publication.
While oxidized wine does not present an acute health hazard, regulatory authorities mandate its removal because the chemical breakdown destroys the commercial quality and integrity expected by purchasers. Consumers who possess containers from the identified batches can return the merchandise to the respective retail locations to claim refunds under standard food safety complaint procedures.
