Cycle Austria: Join ‘Österreich Radelt’ & Win Prizes | Spring 2024 Campaign
Vienna residents will soon be able to log cycling kilometers automatically as part of the nationwide “Österreich radelt” (Austria Cycles) campaign, which officially launches today, March 20th, and runs through September 30th.
The initiative, designed to promote cycling for both recreation and commuting, allows participants to track their mileage via the “Österreich radelt” app or through the campaign website, www.radelt.at. New this year, the app integrates with popular tracking applications and sports watches, streamlining the process of recording cycling trips.
Mobility Minister Peter Hanke emphasized the health benefits of cycling, stating, “Cycling is healthy exercise in the fresh air and can be easily integrated into everyday life. This makes it a simple recipe for a better quality of life for many people. We are specifically reinforcing this positive trend with modern cycle paths and clear, fair traffic rules.”
The campaign aims to build on the success of 2025, when 43,895 people collectively cycled approximately 37 million kilometers, resulting in a reduction of nearly 7,000 tons of CO₂ emissions, according to campaign organizers.
Participants have the opportunity to win prizes, including a limited-edition bicycle helmet designed as part of a recent design competition. The helmet, intended to symbolize safe and stylish cycling, will be raffled among those who register their kilometers.
“Österreich radelt” encourages participation from individuals, as well as organizations such as companies, schools, universities, clubs, and municipalities, fostering a sense of community and friendly competition. Participants can set personal goals, track progress with friends and teams, and discover new routes.
The initiative is a nationwide effort, coordinated by the federal government in collaboration with Austria’s regional governments. The campaign’s slogan, “Jede Radfahrt zählt!” (“Every Bike Ride Counts!”), underscores the importance of every journey, no matter how short.
