Cuba Blackout: Nationwide Power Outage Hits Island for 3rd Time in March

March 22, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

HAVANA — Cuba’s power grid experienced a complete collapse Saturday, leaving the entire country without electricity for the third time this month, as the government grapples with a deteriorating infrastructure and a sustained U.S. Oil blockade.

The Cuban Electric Union, the state-owned utility, reported the total blackout across the island but did not immediately state the cause of the outage. Restoration efforts are underway, authorities said, though timelines remain unclear. Nationwide or regional power outages have become increasingly frequent over the past two years, driven by breakdowns in aging infrastructure and exacerbated by fuel shortages that trigger rolling blackouts of up to 12 hours.

Monday saw the most recent nationwide blackout and Saturday’s incident marks the second such event in the last week and the third in March alone. The disruptions are significantly impacting daily life for Cubans, hindering function, disrupting cooking, and causing food spoilage as refrigeration fails, according to residents.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel has stated that Cuba has not received oil shipments from its foreign suppliers for three months. The island nation currently produces only approximately 40% of the fuel required to meet its economic needs.

The deterioration of Cuba’s electrical grid has been ongoing for years. Yet, the government attributes the recent surge in outages to a U.S. Energy blockade, a position reinforced by comments made by U.S. President Donald Trump in January. Trump warned of potential tariffs on any nation that continues to sell or provide oil to Cuba. The Trump administration is demanding Cuba release political prisoners and implement political and economic liberalization measures as preconditions for lifting sanctions. Trump has also publicly discussed the possibility of a “friendly takeover of Cuba.”

According to NPR reporting from March 21, 2026, life for Cubans has become a “desperate struggle” amid the ongoing crisis. Patrick Oppmann, Havana bureau chief for CNN, described a “humanitarian crisis in real time,” with food spoiling and widespread power outages lasting for most of the day, and in some cases, the entire day. Transportation systems are also severely impacted.

As tensions between Washington and Havana escalate, the U.S. Continues to maintain its oil blockade, while Cuban officials have indicated they have no intention of ceding control of the island nation despite ongoing negotiations with the U.S.
