Cross-Border Project InnRaum Secures Permanent Funding, Expanding Regional Collaboration
brunswick/Wolfsburg, Germany – November 18, 2025 – A landmark initiative fostering collaboration between the German states of Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt has been granted permanent funding, ensuring the continuation of Project InnRaum and its efforts to drive innovation and economic growth across the border region.The decision, announced today, solidifies a program initially launched in 2018 that has demonstrably strengthened ties between the Brunswick and Wolfsburg areas.
Project InnRaum, focused on harmonizing infrastructure, promoting joint research ventures, and streamlining administrative processes, has proven instrumental in overcoming regional fragmentation. The permanent continuation of the project, backed by sustained financial commitment from both states, will allow for expanded initiatives in areas like lasting mobility, digital change, and workforce development, impacting businesses and residents throughout the region. This move signals a long-term commitment to cross-border cooperation as a key driver of economic prosperity and regional cohesion.
Originally conceived as a five-year pilot program, InnRaum has facilitated over 60 collaborative projects, involving more than 150 companies and research institutions.These projects have generated approximately €20 million in additional investment and created over 500 new jobs, according to a recent evaluation. the program’s success hinges on a unique governance structure, bringing together representatives from both states, local municipalities, and the private sector.
“The positive effects of InnRaum are clearly visible,” stated lower Saxony’s minister for Economic Affairs, Dr. Bernd Althusmann, in a press release. “The permanent continuation is a strong signal for the region and its future.” Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister of Science, Energy, Climate Protection and the Environment, Dr. Claudia Dalbert, echoed this sentiment, adding, “this is an investment in a strong, innovative, and competitive region.”
The project’s ongoing initiatives include the development of a cross-border digital platform for businesses, improvements to transportation links between Brunswick and Wolfsburg, and joint research projects focused on renewable energy technologies. Future plans involve expanding the program’s scope to include additional municipalities and sectors, further solidifying the region’s position as a hub for innovation and economic growth.
