Croatia’s Women’s Beach Handball Team Returns to Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics
Croatia’s women’s beach handball team enters the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games as the only returning female medalists from the sport’s 2018 debut in Buenos Aires, where they won silver. The squad brings high levels of continuity and tournament experience to Senegal, the first African host of an Olympic event.
A Veteran Squad in Youth Competition
Katija Furcic is the only player present at all the events for this generation: the U16 European Championship 2024, the U17 European Championship 2025 and 2026, and the IHF Women’s Youth World Championship 2025. Along with a world championship appearance last year and two European tournaments under her belt, Petra Gudelj holds the unique distinction within her team of having competed at a senior level during The World Games 2025.
The continuity extends to the coaching staff. Mocilac, who has played beach handball since 2003 and coached the discipline since 2005, was part of the Croatian delegation in Buenos Aires 2018 alongside team official Sinisa Ostoic. Both men were part of the coaching staff of the multiple medal-winning Croatian men’s senior team over many years.
Tactical Challenges in Group A
Croatia faces a demanding preliminary path in Group A, where they are joined by Spain, the People’s Republic of China, and Mexico. Spain represents a familiar and formidable hurdle for the Croatians, having beaten them at the last three youth events. These losses include a 0-2 result in the Tunisia 2025 World Championship group stage, a 1-2 quarter-final defeat at the 2025 European Championship, and two losses in 2026—a 0-2 main round result and a 1-2 semi-final loss in Zagreb.
To neutralize the Spanish attack, Croatia relies on goalkeeper Tonka Papic. During the 2026 U17 European Beach Handball Championship, Papic recorded 46 saves from 182 shots, achieving a 25% save rate that earned her a spot on the All-Star Team. Iva Suncica Mastelic will split responsibilities with her, having previously competed for the Croatian squad that secured silver at the indoor U17 European Championship last year. Offensively, the team leans on Sara Vukelic, who led the scoring for Croatia with 130 points at the continental event earlier this year.
Building a Legacy in Senegal
Dakar 2026 marks a milestone as the first Olympic event hosted on the African continent. The Games aim to promote the spirit of “Teranga”—a Wolof term for warmth, respect and hospitality—while fostering cultural and economic development. The tournament serves as a platform for growth, with the International Olympic Committee introducing the first Refugee Olympic Team to the Youth Games, composed of athletes based in Africa.
For the Croatian delegation, the event is a vital component of a long-term development strategy. Coach Mario Mocilac noted that Croatia has national championships in this age category and even younger, providing a base for future results. Key player Nola Lucaric is listed as a defender/left wing.
The Croatian side remains focused on their primary objective: performing well in every group-stage match, achieving the best possible ranking and securing a favourable position ahead of the quarter-final. With the support of the Croatian Olympic Committee, the team aims to prepare as thoroughly as possible to perform at its best in every match.
