Tanvi Patri reaches Youth Olympics badminton singles final

Tanvi Patri reaches Youth Olympics badminton singles final

November 5, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Tanvi Patri has secured a place in the women’s singles badminton final at the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, becoming the first Indian to reach the gold medal match in the event. The 15-year-old from Odisha defeated Japan’s Yuzuno Watanabe 21-14, 11-21, 21-19 on Wednesday to advance.

Path to the final in Dakar

Patri is the first Indian to reach the final of the women’s singles event at the Youth Olympic Games. While three Indian male shuttlers—HS Prannoy in 2010, Aditya Joshi in 2014, and Lakshya Sen in 2018—reached the semifinals, none had advanced to the final round, as reported by News18. Prannoy and Sen ultimately secured silver medals, while Joshi exited in the semifinals.

The teenager’s campaign in Dakar began with a quarter-final victory over Thailand’s Kungkaew Kakanik, winning 21-17, 21-13. The subsequent win over Watanabe places her in a position to potentially become the first Indian shuttler to claim singles gold at the Games. She is scheduled to face China’s Zhang Yu Xin in the final on Thursday.

Developing the competitive edge

Patri’s familiarity with Chinese training methods is a notable element of her preparation. She spent her early days in the sport training in China, where her father worked as an IT professional. During that time, she also practiced skating, which she credits for improving her balance and footwork. While primarily a junior competitor, she has successfully transitioned into the senior division.

In August 2026, she won the women’s singles title at the Pontianak International Challenge in Indonesia. During that tournament, she defeated top-seeded Rachel Chan of Canada in the semifinals and third-seeded Kim Min Sun of South Korea in the final, winning the latter match 21-5, 21-6.

Historical context of junior dominance

The achievement in Dakar follows a successful 2026 season for the youngster. Earlier this year, she won the girls’ singles title at the Asian U17 Junior Championships in Chengdu. According to News18, she is the first Indian player to hold both the Asian U15 and U17 singles titles, having won the U15 crown in 2024.

Head-to-head records and upcoming challenges

While Patri defeated Watanabe in Dakar, she previously faced the Japanese player at the 2024 Pathum Thani Junior International Series in Thailand, where she lost 14-21, 10-21.

Only three Indian players in history have reached the semifinals of this specific competition, and Patri now stands alone as the only one to cross the threshold into the final match. Her performance on Thursday will determine if she can convert this milestone into the country’s first gold medal in the discipline, following the silver medals won by HS Prannoy and Lakshya Sen in 2010 and 2018 respectively.
