Corsica: Nazione Demands Abandonment of Harmful Autonomy Project

Corsican Nationalist Party Nazione Escalates Opposition to Autonomy Plan, Calls for land Preservation & Electoral Reform

ajaccio, Corsica – The Corsican nationalist party Nazione has sharply escalated its opposition to the proposed autonomy agreement currently under discussion, vowing to fight against what it calls a betrayal of the Corsican people. The announcement, made during a gathering at the Ghjurnate gallery, signals a potential shift in the islandS political landscape and a renewed focus on land rights and electoral integrity.

Nazione views the current trajectory as a risky one, framing the political forces at play as a repeating cycle of past failures. The party intends to leverage popular mobilization, mirroring the strategy of the Kanak National Liberation Front and socialist (FLNKS), which is preparing to formally reject the “Bougival text” – the proposed autonomy agreement – at an upcoming congress. Nazione argues the agreement is detrimental to the interests of the Corsican population.”We are running with alternatives, with the friends,” stated party spokesperson Petru antone Tomasi, “but we warn, we will fight so that it does not build on a return from the political forces of the past.” The party is actively courting those previously aligned with other political movements who feel disillusioned, calling on “patriots who sincerely believed…and who were deceived” to join their cause.

Longstanding Grievances & the Fight Against “Settlement Colonization”

Beyond the immediate dispute over autonomy, Nazione is re-emphasizing its core concerns, particularly what it terms “settlement colonization” – the influx of mainland residents and the resulting pressure on land ownership. The party intends to make land preservation “the mother of the battles,” and will support any initiative, regardless of its origin, that protects Corsica’s land heritage.

Nazione is advocating for widespread adoption of the “Alzi model,” a resident status implemented ten years ago by the mayor of Alzi, Simon Venturini. This status, approved by the municipal council and unchallenged as, offers a potential mechanism for regulating residency and protecting local land rights. The party is urging all Corsican councilors to implement similar measures and is calling on real estate professionals to inform potential buyers about the availability of this status as part of their advisory duties, aiming to create “a massive deterrent weapon” against outside land acquisition.

Electoral Reform as a Key Demand

Looking ahead to municipal elections less than a year away, Nazione is raising concerns about the influence of recent arrivals on the outcome. The party fears the election of mayors who represent “the colonization of settlement” and plans to propose the creation of a “legitimate electoral body” to ensure the future of Corsica is decided by its established residents. This proposal will be central to the political debate when schools resume in the fall.

The escalating rhetoric from Nazione underscores a growing tension within Corsican politics, and signals a commitment to a more assertive defense of the island’s cultural identity and territorial integrity. The party’s strategy, combining opposition to the autonomy agreement with a renewed focus on land rights and electoral reform, positions it as a key player in shaping Corsica’s future.

Note: FLNKS stands for Kanak National Liberation Front and Socialist. Bougival refers to a set of proposed autonomy arrangements for Corsica.
