Greenhouse gas emissions at a minimum during Corona

The amount of greenhouse gases emitted in Hessen has fallen to an all-time low due to the corona pandemic. Emissions caused in the federal state decreased by 7.4 percent in 2020 compared to the previous year, the state statistics office announced on Friday in Wiesbaden. In total, greenhouse gases were released in 2020, which correspond to 36 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2).

That means the value for the year was lower than ever. “The background of the low level of emissions is largely due to the effects of the corona pandemic,” the authority said. Compared to the international reference year 1990, the decrease is 29.6%. “The goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 30 percent by 2020 compared to 1990 has almost been achieved,” said the Hessian Ministry of the Environment.
