COVID-19 Hospitalizations Rise in South Korea, Officials Urge Caution as Fall Vaccination Campaign Looms
Namwon, South Korea – Health officials in Namwon are reporting a sustained increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations, marking the tenth consecutive week of rising cases. The Namwon Public Health Center anticipates this trend will continue through September, prompting renewed calls for adherence to preventative measures, particularly to protect vulnerable populations.
Recent surveillance data from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reveals 433 COVID-19 related hospitalizations were recorded during the 25th-36th epidemiological weeks (August 31st – September 6th).Notably, over 60% of these hospitalizations were among individuals aged 65 and older.
“We are seeing a concerning rise in hospitalizations, and it’s crucial that families of high-risk individuals – the elderly and those with compromised immune systems – seek prompt medical attention if symptoms like sore throat, cough, or fever develop,” stated a spokesperson for the Namwon Public Health Center.
The health center is also emphasizing the importance of continued preventative measures within healthcare and long-term care facilities. Strict adherence to mask-wearing protocols for both staff and visitors is being urged to minimize transmission within these settings.
Namwon city Health Center is actively monitoring the availability of antiviral treatments like Paxlovid, working with local pharmacies and treatment centers to ensure timely access for high-risk patients.
Looking ahead, officials announced the upcoming fall COVID-19 vaccination campaign, scheduled to begin October 15th. Free vaccinations will be available to individuals aged 65 and over at designated medical institutions.
