Tel Aviv / London (IT Boltwise) – An Israeli startup has set itself the goal of revolutionizing ophthalmology by developing the world’s first robot platform for cataract operations.
At a time when the demand for eye operations is increasing worldwide, the Israeli company Forsight Robotics has announced a significant innovation. With the development of the oryom system, a robot platform for cataract operations, the startup wants to close the gap between the increasing demand and the decline in the available ophthalmologists. This development could fundamentally change the way eye operations are carried out.
Forslight Robotics recently completed a financing round in which $ 125 million was collected. These funds are to be used to promote the development and use of the oryom platform. The round was led by Eclipse Ventures, with the participation of Fred Moll, a pioneer of surgical robotics, and Moshe Shoham, a respected professor at the Technion Institute. Both are known for their contributions to the development of robotic solutions in the medical field.
The challenge that is concerned with Forsweight Robotics is enormous. According to a report by the World Health Organization, over a billion people worldwide suffer from avoidable visual loss. The aging population and the decline in the number of ophthalmologists tighten the problem. Dr. Joseph Nathan, co -founder of Forslight, emphasizes that there is no human opportunity to close this gap and that the robotics have to take over.
The forty’s oryom system is specially designed to cope with the complexity and precision of eye operations. It uses AI-based algorithms, computers vision and micromechanics to increase surgical precision and reduce the physical strain of the surgeons. In the past few months, more than two dozen ophthalmologists have successfully tested the system on animal models to validate its performance.
Although the system has not yet been tested for human patients, Forensight plans to start clinical studies by the end of the year. The talks with the US Food and Drug Administration are already underway to overcome the regulatory hurdles. This development could pave the way for a broader application of robotics in ophthalmology.
The vision of Forslight goes beyond cataract surgery. The company plans to expand the platform for other ophthalmological interventions such as retina operations and glaucoma treatments. These extensions could improve the availability of specialized eye operations worldwide and facilitate access to life -changing treatments.
The automation of eye operations could also overcome the geographical barriers that limit access to high -quality eye care. With only 31.7 ophthalmologists and 14.1 cataract surgeons per million people worldwide, the need for innovative solutions is urgent. Forsweht Robotics could play a key role with his technology, to close this gap and to lead ophthalmology into a new era.
