Fort Collins, Colo. – The Colorado State Rams delivered a stunning upset Thursday night, sweeping rival Colorado 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-17) at Moby Arena and handing the Buffaloes thier first loss of the season. The victory marks a notable momentum shift for CSU and a statement win in the annual Golden Spike rivalry.
Colorado entered the match with a perfect 9-0 record, having dropped only three sets all year. The Rams dismantled that record in just over 90 minutes, matching CU’s total sets lost for the season in a single contest. This win is especially impactful for Colorado State, which came into the game at 4-4 following a 3-0 defeat against Notre Dame in front of a large home crowd.
Maria Brun led the Rams’ offensive charge with 11 kills, while Halle Jameson and Brenna Rowland each contributed eight. kekua Richards added seven kills and a team-high seven blocks. The Rams’ dominant performance was witnessed by a crowd of 6,395, boosting their already impressive season average attendance to 4,883 per game – sixth highest in Division I.
The Golden Spike Trophy, awarded to the winner of the two-match series between CSU and CU, is now firmly within Colorado State’s grasp.Even a loss in the rematch, scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sept. 19 in Boulder, wouldn’t prevent the Rams from claiming the trophy, as they would win based on total sets won across both matches.
