Cincinnati ATP Masters 1000: which Argentines play the tournament and what is the schedule

The ATP Cincinnati Masters 1000, which begins this Sunday, August 14 in Ohio, will feature the presence of three Argentines of the highest of the 2022 season. The contest integrates the group of nine appointments of the circuit that, in assigned points and in prizes awarded, are one step below the Grand Slam.

The contest is also part of the cement tour in the United States, which leads to the US Open. The Argentines who will make up the singles draw are Diego Schwartzman (14), Francisco Cerundolo (30) y Sebastian Baez (32).

It will be, in turn, a tournament with weight loss among the top leaders of the circuit that are active. The great absence points to Novak Djokovicwho was denied permission to enter the country by the United States government for not being vaccinated against Covid-19.

In 2021, the Cincinnati Masters 1000 The winner was German Alexander Zverev by beating Russian Andrey Rublev in two sets in the final. In the women’s draw, it was the Australian Ashleigh Barty who established herself after also defeating the Swiss Jil Teichmann in two straight sets.

The novelty for Argentina has to do with the fact that the two best Argentines located in the ranking will play together in the Cincinnati Masters 1000. Is that in doubles, Diego Schwartzman and Francisco Cerúndolo will team up for the first time.

These two tennis players are the best Argentine singles players in the world ranking. For Cerúndolo it will be his doubles debut in this type of tournament, while for Schwartzman it will be his seventh participation.

Although they will be on the same side of the net, these Argentine tennis players met as rivals on three occasions: Little Schwartzman beat Cerúndolo in the Buenos Aires 2021 ATP final and, in the current season, repeated in the quarterfinals of the same tournament in the Argentine capital and in the semifinals of the ATP 500 in Rio de Janeiro.

The Argentine will also participate in the doubles tournament of the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati Horacio Zeballos, who will have his usual partner Marcel Granollers. It is the same duo that was crowned in this same contest in 2021: in the final they beat the Americans Steve Johnson and Austin Krajicek 7-6 (7-5) and 7-6 (7-5).

The flip side of the presence of the best national rackets in Cincinnati among men is the absence of Argentines in the women’s draw. Gisela Dulkoalready retired, also celebrated in doubles in this event, when in 2006 she won together with the Italian María Elena Camerín.

The history of titles in singles of the Masters 1000 of Cincinnati does not have coronations of Argentine tennis players. The one who went the furthest was William Vilaswho in 1972 played the final against the American Jimmy Connors and lost in two sets (6-3, 6-3).
