Chris Paul, 12-Time All-Star and ‘Point God,’ Announces Retirement
LOS ANGELES – Chris Paul, one of the NBA‘s most celebrated point guards, announced his retirement from professional basketball on Monday, bringing an end to a storied 21-year career. The 40-year-old (he will turn 41 in May) shared an emotional video on social media confirming his decision at the conclusion of the current season.
Paul, often referred to as “The Point God” for his remarkable court vision and playmaking ability, was selected fourth overall in the 2005 NBA draft by the New Orleans Hornets. He spent six seasons in New Orleans before embarking on a career that included stints with the Los Angeles Clippers (2011-2017), Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder, Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors, and a recent return to the Clippers.
Despite never winning an NBA Championship, Paul achieved meaningful individual accolades, including 12 All-Star selections, most recently in 2022. He also earned two Olympic gold medals representing the United States at the 2008 Beijing games and the 2012 London Games.
Currently the second-oldest active player in the NBA behind LeBron James (who turns 41 on December 30), Paul’s decision prompted a heartfelt response from James.”He has nothing to hang his head over. He’s done pretty much everything this league has to offer. I hope you take it all in,” James said. ”I should be as happy as possible. I know he is happy returning to Los Angeles with his family.”
Paul’s statistics declined during his recent return to the Clippers, but his impact on the game and his legacy as one of the premier floor generals of his era remain firmly cemented.
