The main structure of China’s second domestically-built large cruise ship, the Aida·Hua Cheng, was completed Friday, according to the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC). The vessel is slated to depart the shipyard for mooring and commissioning in mid-March, with sea trials planned for the conclude of May and official delivery expected before the year’s end.
The Aida·Hua Cheng, which translates to “Flower City,” is a sister ship to the Aida·Mo Du, China’s first domestically-built large cruise ship. Construction of the Hua Cheng began in August 2022. The new vessel is 341 meters in length and has a displacement of approximately 142,000 tons, slightly larger than its predecessor. It will operate international routes departing from Guangzhou Nansha, hence its name referencing the “Flower City” of Guangzhou.
The completion of the main structure marks a significant step forward in China’s ambitions to develop its domestic cruise shipbuilding industry. Following the structural completion, the ship will undergo installation of all onboard equipment and systems, followed by comprehensive testing and trials.
Compared to the Aida·Mo Du, the Aida·Hua Cheng incorporates more advanced technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) features. It also includes a wider variety of cabin types and enhanced entertainment and experiential facilities, according to CSSC. The ship’s gross tonnage is 14.19万 tons.
The Aida·Hua Cheng is themed around the Lingnan culture. The ship’s departure from the shipyard to the dock is referred to as “outfitting,” signifying the completion of the main construction phase and the beginning of preparations for sea trials.
