Chinese Naval Activity Raises Tensions ⁤in Indo-Pacific

TAIPEI, Taiwan A critically important deployment of chinese⁢ warships is⁤ underway across a broad swath of the Indo-Pacific, raising concerns about escalating tensions and potential military pressure on Taiwan. The activity,‍ detected ‌beginning Friday, stretches from the yellow sea to the West Pacific, encompassing the East China ⁤Sea ⁤near the disputed Diaoyu Islands and the South China Sea, according to Taiwan’s presidential office.

taiwan’s defense⁢ ministry and security agencies are closely monitoring the situation, with a security source ‍describing the⁣ number of warships involved ‍as‌ “significant.” While the exact number of vessels has ‍not been disclosed, the scope of the operations⁢ – extending beyond the Taiwan Strait – is being characterized by Taiwanese officials as a threat to ⁣regional stability. “This really‌ poses a threat and has an impact ⁣on‌ the Indo-Pacific and the entire region,” said Karen Kuo, spokesperson for the president’s office, in a statement reported by AFP on‌ Friday.

Beijing claims Taiwan ⁣as part of its ⁤territory and‍ has not ruled ‍out the ⁤use of‍ force to achieve unification. This latest naval activity coincides⁤ with what ⁣Taiwan’s ‌intelligence chief, tsai Ming-yen, identified as the “peak season” for China’s annual military evaluation⁣ exercises,⁣ warning that routine drills could be leveraged ‌to directly pressure ‍Taiwan.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not ⁤directly confirmed the⁤ increased naval‍ activity, but spokesperson Lin Jian stated that China consistently follows ⁣a defensive policy and ⁤that its ‍naval and coast guard ⁣operations adhere to domestic and international laws. Lin urged “relevant parties” ‌not to “overreact⁤ or ‍spread unfounded ⁣sensations.”

The deployment ⁤occurs amidst ongoing disputes in the South‍ China ⁢Sea, where China asserts sovereignty over‌ nearly the entire region, conflicting with claims from several Southeast⁢ Asian nations. ‌Taiwan has called on Beijing to “show restraint” while expressing confidence in its ‌ability to manage the situation.
