China Floods and Landslides Kill Dozens as Typhoon Maysak Hits Southern Regions
With 40 rivers and waterways bursting their banks, the disaster has shifted from a weather event to a critical infrastructure failure.
Guangxi Flood Crisis and Infrastructure Failure
In the southern region of Guangxi, six people are confirmed dead, according to regional officials. The devastation is anchored by the impact of Typhoon Maysak, which dumped torrential rain across the province and neighboring Guangdong. State media reports that nearly 13,000 acres of agricultural land have been damaged.

The most critical failure occurred at a reservoir dam in Guangxi. CCTV footage shows water rushing through crumbled concrete walls, forcing rescue workers to deploy inflatable boats to reach stranded residents.
Minister of Water Resources Li Guoying warned that the safety of reservoirs and embankments faces a “severe test” due to the prolonged passage of floodwaters. He specifically identified the Wuzhou Hydrological Station in Guangxi, where flood peaks are expected to exceed warning levels by more than six metres (20 feet) by early Thursday.
The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters has maintained the second-highest level for flood-control emergency response. To mitigate the immediate crisis, Xinhua reports that Chinese authorities are delivering food, raincoats, and rubber boats to the affected areas.
Casualties in Hubei and the Gansu Landslide
While Guangxi battles rising river levels, central and northwestern China are dealing with distinct geological and atmospheric disasters. In Hubei province, thunderstorms and gale-force winds killed 11 people and injured 331. Xinhua reports that 4,800 houses were damaged and 22 collapsed in the province, with one person still missing.
Further north in Gansu province, a separate catastrophe unfolded in Rencang village, Dangchang County. A landslide struck at 6:56 am on Tuesday, burying 33 people. Local authorities, via Xinhua, confirmed on Wednesday that search and rescue operations have concluded with a final death toll of 21 fatalities.
Authorities have allocated 30 million yuan (approximately $4.4 million) for reconstruction funds.
| Region | Primary Cause | Reported Fatalities | Key Damage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guangxi | Typhoon Maysak / Dam Burst | 6 | 13,000 acres farmland; dam failure |
| Hubei | Thunderstorms / Tornadoes | 11 | 4,800 houses damaged |
| Gansu | Landslide | 21 | Rencang village buried |
National Response and Long-term Vulnerability
Xi said on Tuesday that rescuers should "go all out" in organizing emergency operations, according to CCTV.
Natural disasters are common across China, particularly in the summer when some regions experience intense rainfall while others bake in scorching heat.
