6 Dead After Virgo Transport 8 Capsizes in Java Sea with 243 On Board

September 13, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

According to the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), multi-agency rescue operations are underway involving the KN SAR Laksmana 241, naval vessels, and regional port authorities to locate survivors and secure the vessel’s last known coordinates.

The Chronology of a Midnight Distress at Sea

The maritime emergency unfolded in the early hours of September 13, 2026. According to details provided by Basarnas Chief Marshal Mohammad Syafii and reported by detikNews, the Kapal Virgo Transport 8 reported facing severe weather conditions at approximately 01:00 Western Indonesia Time (WIB) before all communications abruptly ceased.

The vessel had departed from the Port of Surabaya on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at 10:13 GMT, carrying a total of 243 passengers and crew members. Hours into the journey across the Java Sea, deteriorating meteorological conditions overwhelmed normal operational channels. General Manager of PT Virgo, Yoel Rihi, formally alerted the Banjarmasin SAR Office at 04:10 WITA, triggering an immediate emergency response protocol.

I Putu Sudayana, Head of the Class A Search and Rescue Office in Banjarmasin and SAR Mission Coordinator, stated during a press briefing that the final verified position of the vessel was roughly 80 nautical miles from the Basirih SAR Pier in Banjarmasin, sitting at coordinates 4°31’51.82"S 114° 2’6.88"E with a heading of 203.94°.

Multi-Agency Rescue Operations and Marine Coordination

In response to the lost contact report, the Banjarmasin SAR Office mobilized six personnel using a Rescue Car D-Max at 04:30 WITA to the Basirih SAR Pier. From there, teams deployed aboard the KN SAR Laksmana 241, embarking on an estimated five-hour journey to reach the targeted search sector.

According to regional reporting from Kompas, Basarnas has coordinated a broad coalition of maritime and military agencies to saturate the search perimeter. The participating entities include:

  • KSOP Banjarmasin
  • Lanal Banjarmasin
  • Ditpolairud of the South Kalimantan Regional Police
  • Banjarmasin Navigation District
  • PT Pelindo Banjarmasin
  • The Virgo Ship Agency’s Banjarmasin branch

Rescue teams have equipped the deployment with advanced water rescue gear, diving apparatus, specialized communication systems, and Starlink terminals to maintain operational connectivity in open waters. Additionally, Pertamina tanker crew members assisted in initial local sightings and evacuation efforts, while regional medical teams, such as those stationed at RSUD Ulin, remain on high alert to receive incoming casualties.

Casualties and Onshore Response

As search and rescue sweeps continue across the Java Sea, recovery operations have yielded confirmed fatalities. Data compiled from SAR command posts indicates that the confirmed death toll among the passengers and crew has risen to six victims. Families and concerned relatives have gathered in large numbers at the Trisakti Port post in Banjarmasin to seek real-time updates regarding missing loved ones.

Local authorities have urged the public to rely exclusively on official updates released by Basarnas and authorized government channels, warning against the dissemination of unverified information across social media networks.

The joint task force continues to deploy air support via SAR helicopters alongside naval assets from the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) and marine police units to comb the Java Sea. Operations remain active as search coordinators prioritize locating any remaining survivors drifting within the 80-nautical-mile operational zone.
