Rising Tensions: China Increases Activity Near Taiwan & Japan, Sparks Diplomatic Row
Recent days have seen escalating tensions between China and Japan, coinciding with increased Chinese military activity near Taiwan. Maps from Taiwan’s ministry of defense indicate the presence of up to three drones operating between taiwan and the Japanese islands northeast of the island, notably approaching Yonaguni, the closest Japanese island. While Chinese military transits in the area are not unprecedented, they are infrequent, and activity within Taiwan’s air defense identification zone has been relatively low in recent weeks.
On Saturday, Taiwan’s ministry reported China was conducting a “joint combat patrol” intended to “harass the airspace and sea around us,” deploying its own aircraft and ships in response. Taiwan typically reports these patrols a couple of times monthly, characterizing them as part of a sustained military pressure campaign.
The situation is further intricate by a diplomatic dispute stemming from comments made by Japanese minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan. Following Takaichi’s remarks, Japan has faced mounting pressure from China. the Chinese consul general in Osaka prompted a formal protest from Tokyo with a statement suggesting retribution against those who “stick [their] head out,” and Beijing afterward summoned the Japanese ambassador - the first such meeting in over two years. China’s defense ministry also warned that any Japanese intervention would be unsuccessful.
Escalation has extended to travel advisories. China cautioned its citizens against travel to Japan on Friday, prompting a request from Tokyo for ”appropriate measures” from Beijing.Three Chinese airlines responded by offering free refunds or changes on tickets to Japan on Saturday. On Sunday, China urged its citizens to “carefully reconsider” studying in Japan, citing security concerns, a move that coudl significantly impact Japanese universities. In 2023, a record 336,708 foreign nationals studied in Japan, including over 123,000 Chinese students - the largest single national group.
Chinese state media published an editorial late Saturday accusing takaichi of a “dangerously provocative” and “perverse” political stunt, warning that a conflict between japan and China could escalate into a large-scale war involving other powers, including the United States.
The government of Taiwan maintains that its future should be resolute by its people. Historically, Japanese leaders have maintained a policy of “strategic ambiguity” regarding Taiwan, mirroring the approach of its ally, the United States. However,China’s ruling Communist party insists on the eventual unification of Taiwan with mainland China, viewing any opposition as provocative. Alongside developing military capabilities for potential annexation, China has been increasing both its non-military activity and its rhetoric towards Taiwan.
The Japanese embassy in Beijing has not yet responded to a request for comment.
