Nintendo Switch 2 Webcam Compatibility: Low Resolution is the Name of the Game

June 25, 2025 – Three weeks after its release, the Nintendo Switch 2 is still generating headlines, this time regarding webcam compatibility. Initial reports suggest that while webcams can be used with the Switch 2, performance may be limited, notably for higher-end models.

How are Webcams Used on the Switch 2?

Webcams connect to the Switch 2 for two primary functions: game chat – similar to Discord, allowing for audio, video game footage sharing, and face-to-face dialog – and “camera play” within games like Mario Kart World and the upcoming Super Mario Party Jamboree, where a user’s webcam image can appear in the game.

The resolution bottleneck

Users have reported issues with newer, high-resolution webcams functioning correctly. Julian Fest, General Manager of streamer equipment manufacturer Elgato, suggests Nintendo prioritizes the experience of displaying multiple low-resolution faces on screen over high technical specifications. He speculates the system may struggle to reliably support higher resolutions when displaying multiple webcam feeds simultaneously.

Elgato plans to release firmware updates for their “Facecam MK.2” and “Facecam Neo” webcams to address Switch 2 compatibility. Though, Fest notes Nintendo hasn’t revealed specific requirements for third-party camera compatibility.

What Webcams Are Working?

Currently,older,lower-performance webcams appear to be the most reliable option. Nintendo offers its own 1080p compatible camera for ¥5,980,while Hori’s 480p webcam (¥3,980) is recommended for use in mobile mode. A bulletin board on Reddit is compiling a master list of tested webcams and their compatibility
