A suspect is in custody following the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on Wednesday at a university campus in Utah. The news was confirmed by FBI Director Kash Patel, who praised the swift collaboration between federal, state, and local law enforcement.
“The individual responsible for today’s tragic shooting, which claimed the life of Charlie Kirk, is now in custody,” Patel stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter). ”We extend our gratitude to the Utah state and local authorities for their invaluable partnership. We will continue to provide updates as they become available.”
Utah governor Spencer Cox corroborated the arrest at a press conference, confirming that the suspect is currently being questioned. “At this time, we have no facts suggesting the involvement of a second individual,” Cox stated, while emphasizing that investigations around the campus are ongoing.
Beau Mason, Commissioner of the Utah department of Public Safety, revealed that Kirk was pronounced dead after being transported to a hospital. Initial findings suggest the shot may have originated from a rooftop position, and the suspect was reportedly dressed in dark clothing.
Jeff Long, Chief of Police at the University of Utah, where the shooting occurred, indicated that approximately 3,000 people were in attendance at the event hosted by Kirk. Six officers were assigned to provide security for the event.
Charlie Kirk founded Turning Point USA in 2012, an institution dedicated to promoting conservative principles among university students. The group has often faced criticism for its assertive and sometimes controversial approach. Kirk became a prominent supporter of Donald Trump, frequently defending his policies and serving as a key speaker at his rallies.
