St. George,UT – The suspect in the shooting death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk is in custody after a family member recognized him from photos and alerted authorities,according to NBC News. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office was contacted wiht information that the suspect, identified as Robinson, “had either confessed or implied that he had carried out Wednesday’s shooting,” Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated.
Charlie Kirk, 30, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while engaging in a debate with students. the incident occurred on Wednesday and was captured on video, showing Kirk under a tent before a single shot struck him in the neck. He was pronounced dead at a hospital. Footage also surfaced depicting a figure in dark clothing fleeing across a rooftop near the event.
The FBI joined the investigation shortly after the shooting, requesting public assistance with tips.Investigators interviewed a member of Robinson’s family who reported the suspect had become “more political” in recent years. His roommate provided access to discord messages indicating Robinson’s intent to acquire a rifle, referencing a “drop point” and a location to conceal it “in a bush.”
Authorities recovered a rifle wrapped in a towel on September 11, matching descriptions in the Discord messages. Bullet casings recovered at the scene bore inscriptions, including “Hey fascists! Catch!” with directional arrows, lyrics from the Italian protest song “Bella Ciao,” and the message “If you read this, you are gay LMAO.”
Kirk was a prominent figure in conservative circles and played a key role in Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential victory, according to Vice President JD Vance, a close friend. Turning Point USA, which Kirk co-founded, advocates for conservative politics on college and university campuses.
