Charlie Jacobs Becomes Governor of the Boston Bruins
Jeremy Jacobs handed over his role as Boston Bruins governor to his son, CEO Charlie Jacobs, marking the next step in a family stewardship that began 51 years ago.
Fifty-One Years of Family Ownership and the Board Transition
Jeremy Jacobs bought the Bruins 51 years ago and served as the team’s governor on league matters for over half a century. The 86-year-old owner previously relinquished his role as chairman of the Board of NHL governors in September, handing that position to Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis. While Jeremy Jacobs once regularly attended semi-annual press conferences for the franchise at the start and end of seasons, he has not made public appearances at those events for several years.
“I’m incredibly proud to celebrate the transition of governorship to my son, Charlie,” Jeremy Jacobs said in a team release. “He’s the day-to-day leader of the club, the public face of ownership and an active participant on the Board of Governors as an alternate governor, so this is a natural next step in our succession plan. Charlie has my full confidence, and I’m especially proud that our family will continue its stewardship of the Boston Bruins.”
Charlie Jacobs Steps Into the Governor Role
Charlie Jacobs has spent the past 26 years serving as the team’s alternate governor. Under his leadership in Boston, ownership invested significantly in TD Garden to keep the 31-year-old arena modern.
“It is a tremendous honor to step into the role as governor of the Boston Bruins, representing the team that has been part of my family for the past 51 years,” Charlie Jacobs said in a statement. “I step into this role with the goal of continuing to build upon the incredible legacy and the impact that my dad has had on this franchise and the NHL over his five decades of leadership.”

Charlie Jacobs will maintain his position as chief executive officer of the Bruins. He shares the leadership of Delaware North alongside his brothers, Jerry Jacobs Jr. and Lou Jacobs.
League Leadership and the Next Era in Boston
During his tenure, Jeremy Jacobs worked closely with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman. He pushed for the salary cap system that triggered the lockout and lost season of 2004-05, fundamentally reshaping the economic structure of the league.

“Jeremy Jacobs’ dedication to the Bruins, the league, and the Boston community has been remarkable, and his leadership has left a lasting mark on our sport,” Bettman said in the team release. “After more than two decades as an alternate governor, Charlie is superbly prepared for this moment, and fans can be confident about the Bruins prospects under his leadership.”
Charlie Jacobs noted that his father will remain a mentor and sounding board as the franchise enters its next era. He also stated his intention to partner with NHL Board of Governors Chairman Ted Leonsis, Vice Chair Murray Edwards, league peers, and Commissioner Bettman to continue growing the sport.
