CDC Updates COVID-19 Vaccination Guidance,Emphasizing Individual Risk Assessment
Washington,D.C. - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently updated its immunization schedules for both adults and children regarding the COVID-19 vaccine, aligning with recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP). The revised guidance shifts toward a more individualized approach to vaccination decisions.
The new recommendations emphasize that for adults aged 65 and older, COVID-19 vaccination should be steadfast through shared clinical decision-making between the patient and their healthcare provider. for individuals between 6 months and 64 years old, vaccination is also based on individual risk-benefit assessment, with the CDC highlighting that the benefits are greatest for those at increased risk of severe COVID-19, as defined by the agency’s list of risk factors.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) continues to require nursing homes to offer COVID-19 vaccination to all residents and staff, unless medically contraindicated or already completed. Prior to offering the vaccine, facilities must provide education on its benefits, risks, and potential side effects, utilizing resources like the CDC’s Vaccine Details Statement (VIS),which is expected to be updated to reflect the new recommendations.
Long term care providers are encouraged to begin ordering vaccine supplies and planning vaccination clinics. The American Health Care Association/National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA/NCAL) is updating its #GetVaccinated webpage with resources for providers and will continue to disseminate updates from the CDC and CMS as they become available during the respiratory virus season.
