Ten people are dead following a shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, Canada, authorities confirmed Wednesday. The suspected shooter is among the deceased, found inside a local high school with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.
Seven victims were discovered at the high school. Two more were found dead at a residence believed to be connected to the shooter, police stated. One additional person died en route to a hospital. Approximately 25 individuals are currently receiving medical attention or being evaluated at a local medical center, with two airlifted to hospitals with serious or life-threatening injuries. Authorities have indicated the death toll may rise.
Police Chief Ken Floyd stated during a press conference that determining a motive will be challenging. “I think we’re going to have a hard time establishing ‘why,’ but we will do our best to ascertain what happened,” he said. Floyd confirmed the suspect matches the description provided in an earlier emergency alert – a woman in a dress with brown hair.
Tumbler Ridge, a community of roughly 2,400 residents according to the 2021 census, is reeling from the violence. The local high school serves approximately 160 students.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has cancelled a planned trip to a security conference in Munich, Germany, in response to the shooting. “I am heartbroken by today’s horrific shootings in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. My thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and friends who have lost loved ones in these terrible acts of violence,” Carney wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Political leaders across Canada have also reacted to the shooting, including Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe and Quebec Premier François Legault, expressing their condolences via social media.
Authorities have stated there is currently no indication that additional individuals were involved in the incident.
