Laval, Que. – The Moderna vaccine factory in Laval,Quebec, has begun delivering its first doses of the COVVI-19 vaccine, marking a notable step toward bolstering Canada’s domestic vaccine production capacity. The initial shipment represents a key milestone in the company’s commitment too providing vaccine supply for the country and reducing reliance on international sources.
The delivery coincides with a shift in Quebec’s vaccination policy, announced this fall, which will limit free COVID-19 vaccines to those 65 and over, individuals with compromised immune systems, and other vulnerable populations. This change underscores the evolving approach to pandemic management as immunity levels rise and the virus becomes endemic. Stefan Raos stated, “The decision belongs to quebec […] I think they made this decision in the light of the Council on the Immunization of Quebec. The message that this sends to Quebecers is that those who are the most vulnerable will have coverage of the Quebec Ministry of Health.”
The Laval facility, a major investment in Canadian biomanufacturing, is expected to play a crucial role in future vaccine campaigns and pandemic preparedness.Moderna’s COVVI-19 vaccine remains a key tool in protecting against severe illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19.
