California Volleyball Controversy: Forfeits, Lawsuits, and Trans Athlete Debate

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

California ‍School Forfeits Volleyball Game Over Transgender athlete Policy

A California high school volleyball team has forfeited⁣ a Saturday game due to concerns surrounding a ⁢transgender athlete on‍ the opposing team. The ‍decision, made by the school after⁢ consultation with ⁣students, coaches, and staff, stems ‌from a belief in the⁤ Bible’s authority and the immutability of biological sex.

In a statement released‍ by the school,‍ officials affirmed their commitment to the belief that “God wonderfully and immutably created each person as male or female” and that “sex is changeable.” They stated they do not wish to participate in events that contradict this belief, and also emphasized a duty to the health and safety of their ‌athletes. “standing for Biblical truth means more ‍than the outcome of ‌a game,” the statement concluded.

The controversy highlights ongoing debates regarding transgender⁤ athletes ‍in girls’ sports in California. Governor gavin Newsom’s office recently ‌stated that the situation falls outside his direct authority, deferring responsibility to ‍the California Department ‌of Education⁤ (CDE), the California‌ Interscholastic Federation (CIF), and the state legislature.

According to a statement from Newsom’s office, “CIF is an independent nonprofit that governs high school sports. The California Department of Education ‌is ‍a separate constitutional office. ‌Neither is under the Governor’s authority. CIF and⁣ the CDE have ⁢stated they⁣ follow existing state law – a law that was passed in 2013 and signed by ‍Governor Jerry⁤ Brown (not Newsom) and in ⁤line with 21 other states. For the‍ law to change, the legislature would need to send the Governor‌ a bill. They have not.”

The CIF and CDE are currently facing a lawsuit from the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for refusing to alter policies that allow biological males to compete‍ in girls’ sports.

Recently, on‍ April 1st, the California state Legislature‍ blocked two bills that ⁣aimed to reverse the current law allowing⁢ males to compete in girls’ sports.Every Democrat in⁣ the legislature voted against the bills.Assembly member Rick Chavez Zbur compared ⁤one of⁣ the bills to Nazi Germany, stating, “is really reminiscent to me of what happened in Nazi Germany in the 1930s. We are moving towards autocracy in this country. In Nazi‌ Germany, transgender people were persecuted, barred from ⁤public life.”

GOP ‌Assembly member Kate Sanchez reported that a descendant of a Holocaust survivor was present during Zbur’s ⁤remarks and left the chamber, visibly upset by the comparison.
