A routine California Highway Patrol traffic stop on Interstate 5 in Merced County on Aug. 12, 2026, resulted in the seizure of approximately 30 pounds of suspected cocaine valued at over $800,000, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Interstate 5 Traffic Stop Uncovers Multi-State Trafficking Indicators
The enforcement action began when a California Highway Patrol Central Division canine officer pulled over a 2025 Honda CR-V along Interstate 5 in Merced County for an alleged traffic violation. During the interaction, the officer identified several indicators of possible criminal activity, prompting a deeper vehicle check, according to official statements released by the agency.
A subsequent search of the vehicle yielded a bag containing roughly 30 pounds of suspected cocaine. The street value of the confiscated narcotics is estimated at $817,200. GV Wire reported that the driver was detained without incident during the roadside operation.
Suspect Charges and Local Task Force Investigation
Following the roadside discovery, the driver was taken into custody and booked into the Merced County Main Jail. According to local authorities, the individual faces specific criminal counts, including possession of cocaine for sale and transportation of cocaine across non-contiguous counties.
Jurisdiction over the ongoing inquiry has been handed off to specialized investigators. The Merced Area Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team (MAGNET) is actively managing the case files and pursuing leads related to the shipment’s origin and intended destination.
