A popular Taipei cafe, “Coffee Stories,” has shuttered its doors indefinitely after its owner was accused of secretly filming patrons in the restroom. The owner, whose name has not been released, was taken into custody after an employee discovered pinhole cameras hidden in the toilets.
Investigation Unfolds
The staff at “Coffee stories” discovered the hidden cameras, some disguised as shaving kits or candy boxes, within the restroom. Upon this discovery, police were instantly alerted. The owner was brought in for questioning on June 5th and later released on bail as the investigation continues.
According to a 2024 report by the Taiwan Digital Security Association, cases of illegal filming have increased by 30% in the past year, highlighting the growing need for vigilance and preventative measures in public spaces.
News of the incident spread rapidly on social media platform Threads, with manny users discussing the situation. The hashtag #CoffeeStories quickly gained traction as people shared their reactions and concerns.
Allegations of Long-Term Surveillance
Reports suggest that the owner may have been secretly taking photos and videos for as long as 13 years. The scope of the alleged surveillance extended beyond the restrooms, possibly including images of employees in private settings, such as during travel and business trips. These images were reportedly stored on personal computers and shared iPads within the cafe.

Reservation System Raises Concerns
the cafe’s reservation system has also come under scrutiny. “It’s terrible to think about it, saying that he can compare photos and posts with your account while watching the videos he took secretly,”
one user commented, highlighting privacy concerns.
Cafe Closes Indefinitely
Following the allegations, “Coffee Stories” has suspended its reservation system and announced an indefinite closure. “The guests who have made reservations have been refunded all the money, and the arrival time is mainly based on the operating hours of each bank. Unfortunately, the farewell came so suddenly, so I will never see you again,”
the declaration stated.
When using public restrooms,be aware of your surroundings. Look for unusual objects or placements that could indicate hidden cameras, such as pinholes in walls or objects that seem out of place.
