Search Widens in Newborn Abandonment Case along Arlanzón River
More than six months have passed since a dog walker discovered the body of a newborn near the Gasset bridge on the Arlanzón River in Burgos, Spain. The investigation,led by the Judicial Police Brigade,remains ongoing and complex. Initial efforts to identify those responsible for the abandonment proved fruitless,leading investigators to revisit and expand their search strategy.
The current focus centers on a renewed request to local healthcare facilities – both public and private, and extending to neighboring provinces – for assistance in reviewing medical records. Police are seeking facts on women who underwent medical evaluations between January and March of 2024, specifically those where a pregnancy wasn’t explicitly documented or followed through to a known delivery.This broadened scope builds upon earlier efforts immediately following the finding. Investigators initially contacted health centers seeking records of women who may have been pregnant around the estimated time of birth, determined by forensic analysis to be between November 28th and January 1st. That initial sweep yielded only a single, inconclusive lead.
The expanded search acknowledges the possibility that the mother may have been in the early stages of pregnancy and not yet aware of her condition, or that she may have sought medical attention without disclosing the pregnancy. Crucially, investigators are also considering the possibility that the birth was not professionally attended, and the mother may have subsequently required medical care for complications or injuries related to the delivery. this suggests a potential need for pharmaceutical intervention post-partum, which could appear in medical records.
Recent developments indicate the investigation is firmly centered on the Burgos area. This information has been shared with the Central Intelligence Behavior Analysis section, who are working to develop a psychological profile of the individual(s) responsible for the abandonment.
Further analysis is underway, including DNA testing to determine phenotypic characteristics of the baby, potentially narrowing down the geographic origins of the parents. early suspicions point towards a parent or parents facing socio-economic hardship and potentially unaware of available support systems for childcare. Investigators are also exploring scenarios involving a lack of access to prenatal care, or even the possibility of the mother possessing some level of basic frist aid knowledge.The National Police continue to appeal to the public for any information that might assist in the investigation.
