Sofia, Bulgaria – Teh Bulgarian national men’s volleyball team secured a stunning silver medal at the World Volleyball Championship, falling short against Poland in a thrilling final match. This marks Bulgaria’s best result in the tournament as 1970, igniting national pride and signaling a resurgence for the program.
This achievement represents a monumental leap forward for Bulgarian volleyball, ending a 55-year wait for a medal of this caliber. The silver medal is the sixth in the nation’s history at the World Championship, following a silver in Sofia in 1970 and bronze medals in 1952, 1966, 2006, and 2018. The success underscores a new era for the team, fueled by a blend of veteran leadership and emerging talent.
Bulgaria’s path to the final was marked by a dramatic quarterfinal victory against the United States, overcoming a 0-2 deficit to win 3-2.the team’s resilience and remarkable play were spearheaded by outside hitter Alexander Nikolov, who delivered a stellar performance throughout the tournament, scoring 29 points in the crucial quarterfinal match.
The team, coached by graduates of Gianlorezo Blengini’s program, demonstrated both combative spirit and skillful execution, earning them a place among the top four volleyball nations globally for the first time since 2006.
