Bryant Gumbel Expected to Recover Following hospitalization
New York, NY - Broadcast legend Bryant Gumbel is expected to fully recover after being hospitalized last week following a medical issue, a source familiar with the situation confirmed to page Six. The 77-year-old former “Today” host was transported from his Manhattan apartment to a hospital on October 20.
While the nature of the medical emergency remains undisclosed, the source stated, “He’s not dying…He’s expected to recover.” As of Wednesday, Gumbel remained hospitalized, and a family member told TMZ he was “OK.” It is believed he may have been discharged as early as Thursday.
Gumbel’s family has maintained privacy regarding the incident, with vrey few details released to the public. His wife, Hilary, has not responded to requests for comment.
The hospitalization comes over a decade after Gumbel publicly battled lung cancer. In 2009, he underwent surgery to remove a tumor and part of his lung, openly discussing the experience on “Live With Regis and Kelly.” At the time, he stated, “They opened up my chest, they took a malignant tumor and they took part of my lung and they took some other goodies.”
Gumbel spent 15 years as an anchor on NBC’s “Today” show before departing in 1997. He subsequently hosted HBO‘s “Real Sports With Bryant Gumbel” for 28 years, retiring from the program in 2023. The four-time Emmy winner is widely recognized as a pioneering figure in broadcast journalism.
