Brie Larson Horror ‘Skeletons’ Eyed for Sony Acquisition | EFM 2026

Sony Pictures is poised to acquire worldwide rights to “Skeletons,” a creature feature starring Brie Larson and produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot, in a deal valued around $25 million, according to multiple reports emerging from the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin.

The acquisition, which is expected to be finalized shortly, marks the largest worldwide deal announced at this year’s EFM, signaling strong industry interest in the project. Sony reportedly prevailed over several other studios vying for the domestic rights to the film, according to Deadline.

“Skeletons,” directed by JT Mollner, centers on a young boy’s growing suspicion that his mother harbors a disturbing secret about her true nature. The screenplay, penned by Brian Duffield, is based on a short story by Philip Fracassi. The project was previously known as “Fail-Safe” before a recent title change.

J.J. Abrams, speaking last year at the Cannes sales launch, described Duffield’s script as “an absolute powerhouse… a horror film that is as sweet and moving as it is terrifying.” He also highlighted Larson’s involvement, stating she would elevate the film to “that rare horror film that makes you laugh, feel, and care, before taking you on an absolutely wild ride.”

The film is a production of Bad Robot, FilmNation Entertainment’s Infrared label, and Assemble Media. Infrared’s involvement suggests the studio envisions potential for a franchise, according to Screen Daily. FilmNation, WME Independent, and CAA Media Finance are handling the rights for the project.

Filming is scheduled to begin this summer. Casting is currently underway for the roles of the son and father. Mollner’s recent work includes an upcoming project for A24’s “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” series, and his earlier film “Strange Darling” was praised by Abrams.

Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions has been active at the EFM, previously securing worldwide rights to “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey” starring Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell, and international rights to Celine Song’s “Materialists” two years ago, demonstrating a pattern of strategic acquisitions at the market.
