The response was formally handed over to the Maritime Office in Słupsk to investigate the origin of the pollutant. By Monday, sticky black clumps and oily residues had been documented across an extensive span reaching from Rowów in Pomerania to Rusinowo and Wicie in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.

Maritime Office Points to Illegal Vessel Discharge

Authorities examining the pollution suspect that a passing ship may have washed its fuel tanks out at sea in direct violation of environmental protection laws. Director Anna Sędzińska confirmed the nature of the findings during a press briefing on Monday afternoon.

“This is a petroleum-based substance, but what exactly, we do not yet know. Samples have been taken for testing,” Sędzińska stated. She added, “The substance was certainly thrown ashore by the sea. We have certain suspicions regarding a unit that behaved unlawfully at sea. We are taking explanatory actions in this matter.”

If investigators successfully identify the responsible vessel, the owner will face severe financial penalties. Officials confirmed that the liable party will be held legally accountable for the total costs associated with cleaning the affected beaches and safely disposing of the hazardous waste.

Emergency Beach Closures and Public Safety Warnings

Municipal and regional beaches in Ustka were closed to the public on Monday afternoon following an official order from the Maritime Office in Słupsk. Officials emphasized that closures remain in effect for the municipality and town of Ustka because the highest concentration of the petroleum pollutant accumulated in those specific sectors.

“In connection with the disclosure on the beach of a potentially dangerous substance of petroleum origin, the director of the Maritime Office in Słupsk made the decision to temporarily close the beaches at the height of the commune and city of Ustka,” the office stated in an official announcement. Beaches will stay shut until crews completely remove and neutralize the contamination, ensuring it is safe for the public to return.

Officials urged residents and tourists visiting the Baltic coastline to exercise extreme caution. Authorities asked beachgoers to stay away from the contamination zone, heed all posted warning signs, follow instructions from emergency personnel, and refrain from any unauthorized attempts to clean up the sludge independently.

Next Steps for Cleanup and Waste Neutralization

Cleanup operations began on Monday using local municipal and agency resources. Rather than relying on outside contractors immediately, the Maritime Office planned to collect the debris using its own workforce before transferring the gathered waste to an authorized industrial waste management facility equipped for hazardous material disposal.
