Award-Winning Songwriter and Producer Manuel Seal Dies at 66
Manuel Seal, an award-winning songwriter and producer who helped shape the iconic sound of So So Def Recordings and crafted chart-topping hits for Mariah Carey, Usher, and Janet Jackson, has died at the age of 66. His longtime collaborator Jermaine Dupri announced the death on Instagram on Sunday, September 27, though a public cause of death has not been revealed.

As a foundational architect of the So So Def sound, the Chicago native played an integral role in creating So So Def’s sonic blueprint, lending his skills as a musician, songwriter, and producer to many of the label’s biggest releases and collaborations. Jermaine Dupri paid emotional tribute to his close collaborator, writing on Instagram, “Today I lost the first person to really understand me musically.” Dupri, 54, credited Seal with pushing his creative boundaries and sharing a bond that extended far beyond the studio.
“He had an answer for every one of my ideas; he had a spirit and a presence that I never wanted to leave me,” Dupri wrote in his post. He added that Seal taught him a foundational lesson about the recording process: “The more you know, the better it’s gonna sound.” Dupri concluded his tribute by noting that the pair always ended their conversations with mutual expressions of love, bidding farewell to his late friend with the moniker “Big E.”
A Legacy Defined by Multi-Platinum Hits and Grammy Success
Seal’s career was marked by commercial success and critical recognition. He earned thirteen Grammy Award nominations throughout his decades-long career, ultimately winning the Grammy for Best R&B Song in 2006 for his work on Mariah Carey’s record-breaking smash “We Belong Together.” Released on Carey’s tenth studio album, The Emancipation of Mimi, the track dominated the Billboard Hot 100 for fourteen non-consecutive weeks.
Beyond his work with Carey, Seal contributed to several defining records of contemporary R&B. He earned multiple writing credits on TLC’s multi-platinum sophomore album CrazySexyCool and appeared on the hook of Da Brat’s 1994 chart-topping single “Funkdafied.” He also co-wrote Mariah Carey’s 1995 smash “Always Be My Baby.” Seal’s production and composition footprint extended to Usher’s breakout sophomore album, My Way, where he co-wrote the title track alongside the hit singles “You Make Me Wanna” and “Nice and Slow.” His extensive credits also feature collaborations with Aretha Franklin, Destiny’s Child, Xscape, Tyrese, Alicia Keys, Gerald Levert, and Marc Dorsey.
