Kentucky health officials have confirmed 82 measles cases across the Commonwealth this year, with Christian County logging the highest total at 36 infections. Seven individuals have required hospitalization, and children and teenagers make up the majority of the current outbreak.

Kentucky health officials report a continued increase in measles cases across the state, centered primarily around Christian County. According to the Kentucky Department for Public Health’s measles dashboard updated on Monday morning, the 82 confirmed cases span several jurisdictions.
Christian County accounts for 36 infections, leading the Commonwealth. Other affected areas include Barren County with five cases, Carroll County with five, Jessamine County with four, and Caldwell and Lewis counties with two cases each. Seven people have been hospitalized as a result of the infections, while zero deaths have been recorded.
Vaccination Status and Demographic Breakdown of the 2026 Outbreak
State data reveals that the vast majority of infections involve individuals who are unvaccinated or whose vaccination status remains unknown. Out of the 82 confirmed cases, 80 patients were either completely unvaccinated or had an unknown vaccination record. Only one case occurred in an individual who received a single dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, and one case was reported in a person who received two or more doses.
The outbreak heavily impacts younger populations. Children and teenagers represent a significant share of the infections, with 11 cases recorded among children under the age of five and 38 cases among individuals aged 5 to 17. Adults account for the remaining 33 cases.
The trajectory of the outbreak has accelerated sharply in recent weeks. State figures show only four cases in January and nine in July, before surging to 34 cases in August and an additional 35 cases in September.
Public Health Guidance and Disease Transmission
Measles is classified as a highly contagious respiratory disease that transmits easily through coughing and sneezing. Common symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and a characteristic rash that originates on the face before moving downward across the rest of the body.
Public health authorities continue to stress that vaccination serves as the most effective defense against infection and potential medical complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises a two-dose series of the MMR vaccine to secure strong immunity.
