Birmingham sees Maccabi-Villa demos amid ‘unprecedented’ policing

Protests ⁤Erupt in Birmingham as ⁤Maccabi Haifa Faces Aston Villa Amid Heavy ‍Police Presence

BIRMINGHAM, UK – Demonstrations took place outside Villa Park in Birmingham today as Aston Villa hosted Israeli side Maccabi Haifa in a⁣ europa Conference League ⁢qualifying⁤ match, prompting what police described as an “unprecedented” security​ operation.Protesters voiced opposition to the game proceeding, citing the ongoing conflict in Gaza and accusing Israel of⁣ genocide.

the protests, organized jointly by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War Coalition, Muslim Association of ​Britain, Friends of ⁤Al-Aqsa, kashmir solidarity campaign and Palestinian Forum in Britain,⁣ reflect growing international concern over the situation in Gaza.A UN commission of inquiry released in September concluded there were reasonable grounds​ to‌ believe Israel had committed ⁤genocide against Palestinians,alleging four out of five genocidal‍ acts had been carried out‌ – ‍claims⁢ Israel’s foreign‌ ministry has categorically rejected as “distorted and false.” ⁢

Demonstrators carried Palestinian⁤ flags and placards with slogans including “boycotts not bullets” and “take the foot off their ⁤necks and get off ‌our pitch.” Ayoub Khan,Independent MP for Birmingham Perry Barr,attended a‌ demonstration and led chants⁣ of ‍”Free,Free Palestine,” stating,”We have ‍shown that we are a ‌welcoming‌ community,that we‍ want to​ support footballers ‌but we don’t support hooligans,and we don’t support genocide.”

Authorities implemented a significant policing‌ presence around Villa Park in anticipation of potential clashes, with multiple road closures and⁤ a ‍heightened⁤ security perimeter.The match went ahead despite calls for ⁣its cancellation, and police ‍confirmed a number of arrests‍ were made for public order offences.The outcome of the game and the ongoing protests are being closely watched as tensions⁣ surrounding the conflict in ⁣gaza continue to escalate.
