Binance Suffers Cryptocurrency Robbery of More Than 6.3 Billion Dollars
Binance suffered a cryptocurrency robbery calculated at more than 6.3 billion dollars that took only 20 minutes. The exchange froze customer funds to stop the outflow, while Bitcoin dropped 4% following the incident and the platform’s pre-theft reserves of roughly 130,000 million dollars shrank by nearly 5%.
How the 20-Minute Heist Unfolded
The extraction targeted Ether, Tron, and Bitcoin. Before the breach, Binance administered approximately 130,000 million dollars in crypto. Just under half of the stolen assets were diverted to other exchanges like Tether and Circle, which managed to freeze the funds before they reached local wallets. Polymarket also suffered a separate robbery earlier on the same Thursday, losing more than two million dollars.
Binance has begun recovering affected assets for users and continues to work with law enforcement, issuers, blockchain intelligence firms and industry partners to trace, freeze and recover additional funds. The company has already publicly committed to cover losses through… pic.twitter.com/UqtBd37Fpj
Binance stated on X that it is purchasing crypto so that clients who deposited Bitcoin receive Bitcoin, and those who deposited Ether receive Ether, while coordinating with law enforcement. Changpeng Zhao, co-founder of Binance in 2017 and its CEO until 2023, acknowledged that the company was likely breached via the computer of one of its engineers. Zhao noted that he is currently only a shareholder with no executive responsibility.
Current Binance Hack Dwarfs Previous Industry Losses
The scale of the attack dwarfs previous industry losses. Until this incident, the largest blow to an exchange occurred in 2025, when Bybit lost 1.400 million dollars in a similar robbery attributed to a North Korean organization. Bybit covered the stolen funds and remains operational. Market participants drew comparisons to the 2014 collapse of Mt. Gox, a Japanese exchange that shut down after a hack of about 500 million dollars, during which Bitcoin fell 36%.
Some sources attribute the current Binance hack to a North Korean group with prior history in similar cases. Even if authorities track the movement of the virtual coins through the node registries, capturing the perpetrators or forcing them to return the assets remains a significant hurdle.
The Structural Vulnerabilities of Decentralized Finance
Bitcoin launched in 2009 using blockchain technology as a financial response to the 2008 crisis, designed to decentralize control through parallel transaction ledgers. Yet the absence of a central regulatory authority has fostered high volatility and speculative cycles. El Salvador experienced severe friction attempting to impose the currency for everyday circulation, while China banned mining and circulation due to carbon emission goals and financial instability.
Other blockchain offshoots, including NFTs, fan tokens, and play-to-earn games, have largely collapsed alongside high-profile failures like FTX and Terra. Binance has pledged to use its own funds to make clients whole, but the long-term impact on its market standing remains open.
It is not yet clear whether Binance will manage to overcome the massive economic cost of rescuing its clients or the severe damage inflicted on its prestige.
