Binance Cooperates With FBI After Major Cybertheft
Binance is cooperating with international law enforcement agencies, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, after a 6.3 billion dollar cybertheft that is considered the largest in history. The breach unfolded rapidly on October 29, draining funds within twenty minutes through what blockchain analysts attribute to North Korean hackers.
North Korea Linked to Breach of Technician Laptop
Binance confirmed it is coordinating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the United States Secret Service. Investigators from blockchain analysis firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis traced the attack pattern to previous major hacks attributed to North Korea. The initial breach appears to stem from a compromised laptop belonging to a company technician, which gave attackers entry to one of the company systems and unauthorized withdrawals. Meanwhile, the United States embassy in London and the United States Secret Service declined to comment on ongoing investigations.
Asset Freezes and Recovery Operations
Stablecoin issuers and industry partners moved quickly to immobilize stolen assets. Tether froze almost 1.57 billion dollars in associated assets, while Circle immobilized over 800 million dollars.
Digital Asset Prices Drop After Theft
The theft triggered immediate downward pressure across digital asset markets. Bitcoin dropped to a six-week low of 76,368 dollars, Ether fell more than three percent to a two-month low of 2,178 dollars, and the native BNB token slid 5.3 percent to 699.54 dollars. Tim Sun, senior researcher at the HashKey Group in Hong Kong, said that the event could dampen risk appetite and push investors to reevaluate the safety of assets held on centralized exchanges. Moody’s Ratings vice president Cristiano Ventricelli noted that broader credit risks for the ecosystem depend on the final recovery totals and whether institutional confidence suffers a lasting blow.
Binance Uses Corporate Funds to Cover Losses
Binance announced it allocated approximately 6.34 billion dollars from corporate funds to cover losses, backed by assets including a one billion dollar Bitcoin reserve and over one billion dollars in SpaceX shares held by founder Changpeng Zhao. Withdrawal services were temporarily halted as security teams audited the wallet infrastructure. The exchange stated that withdrawal services are expected to resume within forty-eight hours of Friday, October 30, though executives have not clarified the exact current status of the remaining 3.3 billion dollars in unrecovered capital.
