Billie Eilish attributes her deep concern for the habitat and animals, as well as a commitment to avoiding waste, to both her upbringing and a genetic predisposition inherited from her mother.
For many years, the Grammy-winning artist has been a prominent advocate for climate action. Her environmental efforts include collaborations with fashion brands like Nike and Oscar de la Renta to develop vegan clothing lines. She has also partnered with the environmental nonprofit REVERB for her concert tours. In 2022, Eilish established her own climate summit, Overheated. Moreover, she has been actively involved in implementing the initiatives of Support + Feed, an organization founded by her mother, Maggie Baird, in 2020. Support + Feed’s mission is to combat climate change and address food insecurity.
Eilish and Baird’s discussion on The Whole Story reflects sentiments thay previously shared with Billboard last year. Eilish recounted her frustration with record label executives who were unable to discuss their companies’ sustainability practices, or the lack thereof. She highlighted the important waste generated by the production of ethically questionable merchandise and multiple vinyl album variations.
“It is indeed right in front of our faces and people are just getting away with it left and right, and I find it really frustrating as somebody who really goes out of my way to be sustainable and do the best that I can and try to involve everybody in my team in being sustainable,” Eilish stated at the time. “Then it’s some of the biggest artists in the world making f-king 40 different vinyl packages that have a different unique thing just to get you to keep buying more.”
In the same interview with Billboard, Baird acknowledged that global Music Group has made considerable progress in its environmental practices since Eilish signed with them approximately ten years ago. The live music sector is also demonstrating advancements, with festivals like Lollapalooza adopting a battery-powered hybrid system for its main stage and Coachella planning to debut a zero-carbon stage in 2025.Eilish is among several musicians featured in the upcoming installment of the Whole Story, scheduled to premiere at 8 p.m. ET on july 20. The episode, titled “Change Amplified: Live music and the Climate Crisis,” will feature personal accounts from artists such as Bonnie Raitt,Jack Johnson,Perry Farrell, and AJR’s Adam Met,detailing their individual contributions to transforming the music industry’s approach to environmentalism.
