Bierhoff: Nicolo Tresoldi Could Solve Germany’s Striker Problem
Nicolo Tresoldi could solve the German national team’s problem up front, according to former Germany technical director Oliver Bierhoff, who stated that the German Football Association is already in contact with the young forward as he weighs his international future between Italy and Germany.
International Uncertainty for the Club Brugge Striker
Nicolo Tresoldi was born in Italy to parents of Italian descent before moving to Germany as a teenager. He has since represented Germany at the under-19 and under-21 levels. Despite playing youth international football for Germany, Tresoldi has not yet appeared for either nation at the senior level and is taking his time over his final international allegiance. Recent reports indicate the 22-year-old forward intends to complete the under-21 European Championship campaign with Germany over the summer before making his definitive choice.
Bierhoff Outlines the DFB Pursuit
Oliver Bierhoff, who served as technical director for the German Football Association from 2018 to 2022, weighed in on the player’s development in an interview with German reporter Martin Volkmar. Bierhoff noted that Tresoldi’s physical growth and decision to establish himself abroad have marked significant steps forward in his career. The former striker praised the player’s recent performances on the continental stage, highlighting that scoring in the UEFA Champions League proves he can handle the highest international levels beyond the Belgian league.
“If he keeps going like this, he could solve the German national team’s problem up front. That is what I hope, of course, and why I believe no time should be wasted. But as far as I know, the German Football Association are already in contact with him,” Bierhoff said, via Mediaset. “Naturally, I hope he chooses Germany, because we need every talented player we can get, especially in attack. I do think, though, that the decision should be made not only on sporting grounds, but with the heart too.”
San Siro Hat-Trick Elevates Profile
Attention surrounding the young forward intensified after he netted a hat-trick in a surprise 4-3 victory for Club Brugge against Inter at the San Siro. Tresoldi has openly acknowledged his boyhood affection for AC Milan, describing his recent outing at the San Siro as a dream come true. Bierhoff believes the player possesses the potential to eventually feature for an internationally renowned club like Milan, even if the Italian club currently operates at a different level than during Bierhoff’s own playing career.
Deciding Between Competing National Setups
Both Germany and Italy have faced well-documented challenges at the centre-forward position in recent years, making Tresoldi a coveted prospect for both football federations ahead of the 2028 European Championships. While the DFB maintains active contact with the player, the final decision rests on personal and athletic factors as Tresoldi finishes his commitments with Germany’s under-21 squad this summer.
