Beijing Guoan Coach Montgomery Previews AFC Elite League Clash Against Port FC

November 3, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Beijing Guoan arrived in Bangkok ahead of their fourth-round AFC Champions League Elite fixture against Port FC, with head coach Montgomery outlining a single-minded focus on the upcoming match rather than broader qualification math, 163.com reported on November 3, 2026.

Match Preparation in Bangkok

The 20:00 kickoff on November 3 marks Beijing Guoan’s second trip to Thailand this season. Montgomery addressed reporters during the pre-match press conference in Bangkok, describing Port FC as a completely different and exceptionally strong opponent. The team holds deep respect for the Thai side and intends to field its best possible lineup while giving the fixture maximum effort, according to the 163.com report.

Guoan enters the encounter following a strong start to the continental campaign. Across the opening three matches of the AFC Champions League Elite phase, the club secured two wins and one draw. That undefeated run places the team fifth in the standings. Securing three points in Bangkok would hand Beijing Guoan the initiative in the race for a top-eight finish.

Focus on the Present Over Qualification Math

When questioned about the current qualification system, Montgomery dismissed long-term speculation. He stated that the club holds one objective: focusing entirely on the immediate ninety minutes. He noted that the squad represents China, Beijing, and the club itself, making each match a step-by-step process. Events that have not yet occurred do not warrant excessive thought.

Montgomery emphasized that the ultimate result takes a backseat to the execution of the preparation process.

Cao Yongjing Returns to Strengthen Squad Before Upcoming Fixtures

The roster receives a boost with the return of Cao Yongjing. Cao missed the previous three matches due to absence. While players like Nkololo and Duziak performed admirably in his stead during those fixtures, Montgomery acknowledged that Cao remains an integral member of the squad whose return strengthens the team’s capabilities.

Following the clash against Port FC, Beijing Guoan faces a remaining slate of group stage fixtures stretching into late 2026 and early 2027. The squad travels to South Korea to meet Daejeon Hana Citizen on November 24, before returning home to host Ratchaburi FC on December 1 to close out their 2026 continental schedule. The group stage concludes in February 2027 with an away fixture against Công An Hà Nội followed by a final home match against the Newcastle Jets.
