Behind the wheel of the new Nissan Qashqai: Such crossovers make sense!

The first generation Nissanu Qashqai was introduced in 2007 and, together with a successor that arrived six years later, sold more than five million units worldwide. Six out of ten qashqai have found their owners in Europe, so it’s no wonder that the third sequel is tailor-made for customers on the old continent. This is where the development, design proposal, but also subsequent production took place.

He lost weight, gained muscle

The new generation of the Japanese crossover represents a really significant leap from its predecessor. The car received a modern technical basis in the form of the CMF-C platform, which it shares with other Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance cars. Only the new architecture helped save twenty-four kilograms. If we add a number of body parts made of lightweight materials (aluminum doors, composite boot lid), we get a total saving of 63 kilograms!

However, the novelty is not so easy at all. It grew up, got more equipment and especially more powerful engines with mild-hybrid technology. Nevertheless, all this means an increase in the curb weight of only 28 kilograms in comparable versions. Given how other cars are gaining weight across all segments, this is still a negligible value.

However, what is not negligible is the overall increase in size. It improved in length of 4429 mm (+35 mm) and width of 1838 mm (+32 mm), but at the same time it decreased to 1616 mm (by nine millimeters). The wheelbase stretched twenty millimeters to the current 2666 mm. With the new platform, the luggage compartment has also grown, which can now hold 504 liters (+74 l) and by lowering the rear bench, you will reach a total of 1447 l. The suitcase has an electric opening and small items on the sides of the box. The floor is double and halved, so you can partition the luggage so that the load does not travel in the car.

Still recognizable

The designers say that the goal of the new generation was to significantly modernize the look, but it should still be clear at first glance which model it is. And I dare say the intention worked. The bow is not unified following the example of some other cars, it develops a style called V-Motion with distinctive chrome trim and narrow headlights. They are bifurcated and higher versions now have Matrix LED technology.

In the new package, the Qashqai is one of those cars whose design you just have to think about. At first I wasn’t entirely sure, but over the course of the process it gradually won me over. Only the rear parts with markedly cut taillights and an unmissable molding under the center inscription may seem a bit overcombined to me, but that’s just my personal view.

The car shoes wheels from eighteen to twenty inches. The overall diameter of the twenty, including the tire, has increased by twenty-five millimeters compared to its predecessor. So you don’t have to worry about a low profile – a crossover shoe tire with size 235/45 R20. However, choosing the size of the wheels is more important here than anywhere else. While the eighteen and nineteen are associated with a simpler trailing rear axle, the twenties always have a multi-element. The only exception is all-wheel drive, where you can get a more sophisticated rear axle with less footwear for selected equipment.

Interior for every family

I am really the last person who would like to act backwards in the tests of new cars, or that I am perhaps resisting progress. But the joy of meeting with two other colleagues and dancing about the fact that we can zoom in on the map of the built-in navigation with a physical wheel…

You understand correctly, no matter how extroverted the Japanese crossover looks on the outside, it stays true to the classic controls on the inside. You will find a separate panel here not only for setting the air conditioning, but also for switching between the individual menus of the multimedia system by eight to nine inches. The graphics of the interface itself do not completely compete with the Mercedes S-Class, but it fulfills its purpose – simplicity and intuitiveness – to number one. And who would not like the environment for some reason, can reach for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Including wireless connection!

Even the built-in navigation is not completely discardable, at least during the first rides around Warsaw it worked very well. It is online, so it has information about the current traffic situation and its environment is clear. The only downside to this entire interface is the differential reading of tags with the maximum allowed speed on the virtual exciters and the multimedia itself. While the instrument panel shows the prescribed thirty, which he loaded 500 meters ago somewhere in the village, the navigation correctly informs that I can drive ninety. Basically the only defect of the 12.3-inch screen in the chapel, which otherwise clearly informs about everything essential. And if you don’t like to distract from the road, everything important will be shown on the 10.8 “head-up display. Supposedly the largest in the segment.

Not the largest, but large enough is the interior of the car. Behind the wheel, I am not oppressed in any way by the central tunnel, I can’t even complain about the lack of space with a height of 178 cm “alone”. Here, a few centimeters remain in front of the knees and there is enough space above the head, even though the tested specimen is equipped with a glass panoramic roof, which slightly cuts the space on the back bench. Just take a look at the video attached above, where I tried to show you.

Goodbye, oilmen

We are quite used to the fact that diesels are gradually disappearing from the offer of individual car manufacturers. In such a category, however, we still come across them here and there. However, Nissan said that in qashqaii it resigned completely to diesel engines, so it only offers electrified gasoline engines. But don’t be afraid of the words of electrification, in the case of the “weakest” motorizations it only means being equipped with a mild-hybrid system.

I write the weakest in quotes, because the absolute basis in the form of a four-cylinder 1.3 DIG-T still has a decent 103 kW and 240 newton meters of torque. A hundred in 10.2 seconds and a top speed of 188 km / h are really not something the input unit should be ashamed of. It is an alliance one-three, which we can already know from the bowels of Renault or Mercedes. But the mild-hybrid with a small flashlight is brand new. During deceleration, it gains energy, which it then uses, for example, in stop / start mode.

It was the basic engine that connects exclusively to the six-speed manual that started my testing. It must be said that Nissan chose the test route mischievously, although in the vicinity of Warsaw it probably didn’t even have much to choose from. Lots of smooth straights with a minimum of bends or poor quality sections. Here, even the weaker version of the 13th seemed like a nice companion, with whom I don’t miss it to my satisfaction. The engine collects above two thousand revolutions and the driver senses the most in three and a half thousand. Then nothing much happens and the tachometer procedure is rather linear. However, the acceleration is sufficient for safe overtaking maneuvers, you will definitely not be a brake on traffic.

And the manual six-quality also deserves praise. The tracks are just as long, the backdrop is clearly defined and the gear lever is nicely at hand. I also liked the alignment with the clutch during the seventy-kilometer route. Consumption, including several dynamic tests, eventually showed an average of 6.1 l / 100 km. This may not completely dazzle at first, but I must say that it was possible to go even more economically.

Which, after all, was shown by the second race with a stronger one-three performance. It has a maximum output of 116 kW and 260, and in the case of the automatic machine 270 newton meters of torque. Again, I’m trying a combination with a manual transmission and I’m getting a 5.4 liter appetite. The speech is not dramatically different from the weaker motorization, but the stronger version has a better course at medium speeds, so it is even livelier in the most important part of the band. In the end, I keep the thirteen working with the machine. This is “only” CVT, but completely new (Qashqai receives it as the brand’s first European model). The manifestation of acceleration at steady speed accompanied by an ugly monotonous sound is suppressed here so that the cévétéčko behaves almost like a classic automaton. Among other things, the engineers managed to achieve this by using an electric oil pump, which complements the classic mechanical. As a result, the gear ratio changes significantly faster and there is no significant delay when a sharp acceleration is required. Unlike its predecessor, the acceleration to a hundred with the automatic is better than with the manual.

Twenty are going! Yet

As we said above, the sophistication of the rear axle also varies according to the size of the footwear. During the one-day testing, I had the opportunity to test both versions of the chassis, which relies on classic iron. It must be said that both variants worked very well on the nice Warsaw roads. They successfully ironed out any inequalities on which I did not notice any nervous dodging of the back, as was the case with my predecessor. However, I would like to remind you again that these were really exemplary routes, which are definitely not the standard for Czech conditions. We will see what the new qashqai says about the domestic environment.

However, what should not change significantly is the pleasant feeling of driving. Qashqai received a new power steering, which moved from the steering column to the ridge. Last but not least, it is worth mentioning the steeper 14.7: 1 conversion instead of the previous 19.1: 1. The car is thus very easy to control in tight spaces and on winding roads. In addition, it gives a light-footed impression, willingly turns and does not suffer from significant body tilts. It is only a small taste of the reality of the Czech environment, but it still leaves a very good impression on me.

If all this is not enough for you, don’t despair. The expansion of the new qashqai does not end with the slightly electrified one-threes. Next year, the E-Power hybrid will appear, whose combination of a burner, electric motor and batteries will charge exclusively the petrol engine. The manufacturer even promises lower consumption than today’s diesels. Perhaps only one unpleasant piece of information was heard at the press conference, namely that 4×4 drive is not planned for the hybrid. Either way, I dare say that the Japanese novelty has matured in all directions – it is more modern, more spacious and with the new platform it also provides significantly better driving characteristics. And it also offers all-wheel drive, which is definitely not a matter of course with other crossovers.
